How are gas fees free?

Wisty sponsors transaction fees whenever our sponsor wallet has sufficient balance. Our backend signs transactions as the fee payer, so you don't need SOL for gas. If our sponsor wallet is low, you'll temporarily pay the small network fee yourself (~$0.001 per swap) until we refill it. You'll always see which type of swap you're doing before you approve the transaction.

Is this safe?

Yes! You're only signing the swap approval in your wallet. Your private keys never leave your browser or wallet. The swap is executed through Jupiter's audited smart contracts on Solana.
